Shawnee, Oklahoma, August 26, 2026 -
A piece of Shawnee history was opened today.

The Washington School time capsule gave former students, teachers and community members an opportunity to reconnect with memories from a place that meant so much to Dunbar Heights and the Shawnee community. Each item inside offered a glimpse into the people, experiences and history that helped shape this part of our City.

Now, the site is preparing for a new chapter.

Following the demolition of Washington School, the property will become a $3.5 million park, an investment made by the Avedis Foundation, designed to honor the history of the neighborhood while creating a new gathering place for generations to come.

Preserving our history and investing in our future go hand in hand. This project represents an important investment in Dunbar Heights and the people who have called it home.

The time capsule helped us remember where we came from. What comes next gives us something new to look forward to.

Shawnee, Oklahoma, July 14, 2026 -The City of Shawnee is pleased to announce a significant investment in the future of Farrall Park and the surrounding community through a new partnership with the Avedis Foundation.

The Avedis Foundation Board of Directors has committed $3.5 million to fully fund the development of a new state-of-the-art community park at Farrall Park. The City of Shawnee will lead the construction of the project in partnership with the Avedis Foundation.

Beyond new recreational opportunities, the project will help preserve and recognize Shawnee’s history through the inclusion of memorials honoring Washington School and Dunbar School.

While the Avedis Foundation is providing the funding and the City will oversee construction, the vision for the park will come from the community.

Community input will play an important role in shaping the park’s design, amenities and features. Residents are encouraged to participate in the community engagement process and help shape a space that reflects the needs, history and future of Shawnee.

The City of Shawnee and Avedis Foundation invite residents to get involved and help create a park that will serve the community for generations to come.

Residents can learn more about the project and participate in the community engagement process at www.shawneeok.org.
